Updates: US Navy Warship Shoots Down Multiple Drones, Britain Reports UAS Activity In Region
CENTCOM also released a statement: "Aircraft from Dwight D Eisenhower Carrier Air Wing intercepts an Iranian UAV operating in an unsafe and unprofessional manner".
RED SEA - The U.S. Navy's USS Carney (DDG-64) has once again come under attack according to a Pentagon official, after which Iranian-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for attacking two "Israeli" vessels off Yemen's coast.
This act, it says, was in response to Israeli attacks in Gaza, but did not directly claim attacks on the US warship.
The British military also released incident reports on "Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) activity" in the region, and a "possible explosion", and US Central Command reported that the Dwight D Eisenhower Carrier Air Wing intercepted an Iranian UAV in the Arabian Gulf.
The USS Carney is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer that intercepted/shot down three land-attack cruise missiles and multiple drones launched by Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen just three weeks before this most recent incident. It is unclear if there was any damage to the vessel due to the attacks.
Shortly after the attack, the Pentagon was cited by AP as saying "We’re aware of reports regarding attacks on the USS Carney and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and will provide information as it becomes available".
New Updates Preview: US Central Command reported shooting down multiple drones: “Today, there were four attacks on three commercial ships operating in international waters south of the Red Sea. The destroyer USS Carney responded to the calls of these ships and helped them.
These attacks are a direct threat to international trade and maritime security and have endangered the lives of international crews representing several countries around the world.
We have every reason to believe that these attacks, while carried out by the Houthis in Yemen, are entirely enabled by the Iranian regime.”
