The Philippines recently allowed the U.S. to access four new military bases located within the country as the two countries continue to strengthen ties.
WASHINGTON - The United States military is currently talking about possibly building a port on a Philippine island close to Taiwan, a move that could increase the tension between Beijing and Washington.
According to Reuters, which cited a message from the Batanes Islands governor, Marilou Cayco, the governor has been pursuing funding from the United States to build a civilian "alternative port" on Basco Island.
The islands, which two Filipino officials had said were visited by U.S. troops recently to discuss and assess the port, are located less than 125 miles from the island of Taiwan.
A senior military official stated that the Philippine Armed Forces are looking into a radar system, as well as making improvements on their monitoring capabilities around the location.
The Bashi Channel, which is located between the Batanes islands and Taiwan is a well-known choke point for vessels navigating the region, namely Chinese naval vessels which regularly transit the channel.
