Trump Imposes Tariffs on Foreign Countries to Avoid Taxing US Citizens Risking International Tariff War, Says US Will Take Back Panama Canal
The Dominican Republic has moved ahead with measures to protect its rice industry from US competition by limiting rice imports into the country and placing a 99% tariff on US rice imports.
WASHINGTON - Following President Trump's January 20th inaugural address, where he announced a focus on imposing tariffs and taxes on foreign countries rather than taxing US citizens, the White House has now released a statement confirming that tariffs will be imposed on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, citing the "extraordinary threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs," over the US borders and "unreasonable behavior" by China. All funds have also been cut off to South Africa.
The following tariffs are now in effect:
Canada: 25% tariff (10% for energy)
Mexico: 25% tariff
China: 10% tariff
Additionally, the Dominican Republic has moved ahead with measures to protect its rice industry from US competition by limiting rice imports into the country and placing a 99% tariff on rice imports from the United States.
Trump has also cut off all funds that were being sent to South Africa, accusing the country of "confiscating" land and "treating certain classes of people very badly", adding that the funds would be cut off pending an investigation.
Secretary Marco Rubio said on social media, “Arrived in Panama this evening on my first trip as Secretary of State. We’re working days, nights, weekends -- whatever it takes to strengthen our national security, protect our borders, and enhance economic prosperity for Americans.”
“I met with Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino and Foreign Minister Javiera Chapman to make clear that the United States cannot, and will not, allow the Chinese Communist Party to continue with its effective and growing control over the Panama Canal area.”
“We also discussed efforts to end the hemisphere’s mass migration crisis and ensure fair competition for U.S. firms,” he added.
“The Panama Canal is vital to America’s national and economic security interests. We must remain vigilant in protecting this vital asset from the Chinese Communist Party.”
