Taiwan Reports 2 Russian Warships Approaching Island From South To North
The Russian warships were spotted around the island of Taiwan just a day after Taiwan reiterated its stance that it will attack any Chinese vessels or aircraft that cross over into its airspace.
TAIPEI - Taiwan's Ministry of Defense reported two Russian frigates heading toward the island from South to North in waters east of the island, off its eastern coast on Tuesday.
The statement by the Ministry of Defense said, "As of 23:00 [15:00 GMT Tuesday], two Russian frigates were detected, which were sailing from south to north along our eastern water area".
After sailing north off Taiwan's east coast, the Russian frigates were reported by Taiwan's MOD as departing from the island's "response zone" toward the south of the Taiwanese city of Suao, which houses one of Taiwan's major naval bases.
Taiwan's Ministry of Defense said that they activated shore-based missile systems and sent naval vessels and aircraft to observe the Russian naval activity in the region.
