Russia: Return Of US Nuclear Weapons In Britain Is An Escalation
It is US policy to neither confirm nor deny the presence or absence of nuclear weapons at any general or specific location
MOSCOW - After a March funding request to the U.S. Congress, and news reports indicated that the United States may be planning to store nuclear warheads at Royal Air Force Lakenheath in Suffolk, England, Russia called the possibility an "escalation"
Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the return of American nuclear weapons to Britain would be seen by Russia as anti-Russia destabilization, and an escalation.
“The return of American nuclear weapons to the UK will be perceived by us as an escalation step, leading exactly in the opposite direction from the solution of the urgent task of withdrawing all US nuclear weapons from European countries, where they are deployed as part of the so-called NATO joint nuclear missions".
“This destabilizing practice is openly anti-Russian in nature, as it provides for joint planning and regular training of the operational delivery of nuclear strikes by members of the hostile North Atlantic bloc against targets in Russia from the territory of non-nuclear European countries," she added.
Zakharova said that Russian authorities “for many years have consistently stated that this generates strategic risks and undermines regional security and stability".
She added, “However, NATO chose to ignore our urgent calls for the elimination of this negative factor. Moreover, they declared themselves a "nuclear alliance," she lamented. and her allies."
“We will continue to demand the return of all American nuclear weapons to US territory with the subsequent destruction of the infrastructure that allows them to be quickly deployed in Europe,” she stated.
