Putin: War Has Been Declared On The Russian World. Duma Head Warns of Extinction Due to Insufficient Birth Rates
Russia's birth rate is reported to be 1.6 children per family (1.52 via CIA Fact Book), while 2.1+ per family is required to maintain a stable population.
MOSCOW - During a State Council meeting at the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that "war has been declared on the Russian world" and agreed with member of the Russian state Duma Sergey Mironov who said that "the birth rate is insufficient, because the matter concerns extinction".
“Colleagues from the Duma spoke and said that war had been declared on the Russian world. So it is," Putin said.
Mironov had said that the birth rate in Russia was 1.6 children per family, adding that in order to ensure reproduction (to maintain a stable population) the birth rate should be more than 2 per family, adding "In the Soviet Union, the required two children per family were largely achieved through the republics that are no longer part of Russia".
In September of this year, Russian statistics service Rosstat had recorded that the country had the lowest birth rate since 1999 within the first half of 2024. The births in June were recorded under 100,000.
