Pentagon: Houthi Actions Threaten Regional Stability, Gaza Pier Towed Back To Ashdod, Israel Amid Rough Seas
The June 12th attack on the Tutor resulted in severe flooding and damage to the engine room. One civilian mariner remains missing following the attack
WASHINGTON - The Pentagon says that the recent actions and increased attacks by the Houthi terrorist organization across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, near Yemen are threatening stability in the region, as one civilian mariner remains missing after multiple separate attacks on the Palauan flagged, Ukrainian owned and Polish operated merchant vessel "Verbena".
Additionally, the United States removed the temporary humanitarian aid pier from Gaza ahead of elevated sea states and towed it back to Ashdod, Israel to remain there until the sea state subsides, likely sometime this week, according to Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh.
"Since the pier was anchored on May 17th, over 3,500 metric tons have been delivered for onward delivery by humanitarian organizations.
Of the 3,500 metric tons, 2,500 metric tons were delivered since the temporary pier was re-anchored to the beach in Gaza on June 7th," Singh said during a briefing on June 17th.
Singh's statement said, "Last week, the Houthis struck two different cargo ships, the M/V Tutor, which is Liberian-flagged and Greek-owned, and the M/V Verbena, which is Palauan-flagged, Ukrainian-owned and Polish-operated.
The June 12th attack on the Tutor resulted in severe flooding and damage to the engine room. One civilian mariner remains missing following the attack."
US Reestablished Temporary Pier In Gaza After Being Damaged By Rough Seas On June 7th, 2024
According to U.S. Central Command on June 7th, “At approximately 2:15 p.m. (local Gaza time) on June 7, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) successfully reestablished the temporary pier in Gaza, enabling the continued delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza”.
“In coming days, CENTCOM will facilitate the movement of vital food and other emergency supplies, in support of the U.S. Agency for International Development.”
Shortly after being re-established, the temporary pier was disconnected and moved to Ashdod, Israel due to expected high seas, to be moved back to Gaza after conditions improve.
