North Korea Says It Tested New-Type Intermediate-Range Hypersonic Missile
North Korea reported that the missile reached a peak height of 99.8 kilometers (62 miles) and a second peak height of 42.5 kilometers (26 miles) at 12 times the speed of sound
Pyongyang – Following reports from South Korea, Japan, and the United States about a ballistic missile launch off North Korea's eastern coast, Pyongyang confirmed the event, stating the country had successfully test-fired a new intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile on January 6th which was overseen by the country’s President Kim Jong Un.
“Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and president of the State Affairs of the DPRK, oversaw the test-fire through a monitoring system,” the country’s state media said.
It added, “The test of the new strategic weapon system is part of the plans for the development of the national defense capabilities to raise the durability and effectiveness of the strategic deterrent against the potential enemies in conformity with the changing regional security environment.”
