Acting Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses announced in a statement on January 22nd that 1,500 troops and additional air and intelligence assets had been deployed to the southern border to augment troops that were already conducting enforcement operations in the region.
Additionally, the U.S. State Department has issued a travel warning for Mexico due to frequent gun battles, kidnappings, and violent criminal activity.
Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are being manufactured and used by criminal organizations. These devices have been found around Reynosa, Rio Bravo, Valle Hermoso, and San Fernando along dirt and secondary roads.
The State Department has issued a warning to avoid touching or moving these devices and has also issued a Level 4 travel advisory for Tamaulipas, advising against travel due to crime and kidnapping.
While the explosives found in Mexico are intended for use in conflicts between rival cartels and not to harm foreigners, attempting to move or touch these devices could cause them to detonate and should be avoided.
