TAIPEI - An undersea fiber optic telecom cable connecting Taiwan to the Matsu Islands has been completely disconnected, according to Taiwan's Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA). The disconnection occurred on Sunday on the Taiwan-Matsu No. 2 cable in waters off New Taipei, causing a full outage around midday.
Chunghwa Telecom, which owns and operates all 10 Taiwanese submarine cables, notified the National Communications Commission of the full outage. The Ministry of Digital Affairs asked Chunghwa to activate its backup microwave links to resume communications.
Automatic Switch to Microwave Transmission: Communication services were automatically switched to microwave transmission, ensuring that voice calls, internet access, and other services remained unaffected for Matsu users.
