China: Reunification With Taiwan a "Historical Necessity", Admonishes Taiwan's "Stubborn Pursuit" For Independence Which "Means War"
In October, Taiwan's Presidential office released a statement that said that Taiwan's position on the matter of the country's independence is firm, adding, "This is the consensus of Taiwan's people".
BEIJING - During his 2024 New Year's speech, and ahead of Taiwan's elections on January 13th, Chinese President Xi Jinping declared that the reunification of Taiwan with mainland China is a "historical necessity", adding that "compatriots" from both sides of the Taiwan Strait "must join hands and share the great glory of national rejuvenation".
China's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office also added that the pursuit of Taiwan Independence means war, and claimed on Tuesday that reunification with China is a commonly shared desire for people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, calling on Taiwan's population to promote a "peaceful reunification" and that such an outcome is an inevitability.

During his own New Year's message Song Tao said, "The motherland will eventually be reunified, and it will inevitably be reunified," adding that Taiwan's population should "promote cross-strait relations to return to the right track of peaceful development and promote the process of peaceful reunification of the motherland".
He also voiced China's support for "one country, two systems" and China's opposition to an independent Taiwan, or "interference by external forces".
