China Increases Military Flights Around Taiwan As US Destroyer Transits Strait
China has repeatedly stated that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to China, while the United States says the strait is an “international waterway”.
TAIWAN STRAIT - China increased its military flights around the island of Taiwan on January 25th after the USS John Finn (DDG 113) destroyer transited the Taiwan Strait on January 24th, 2024.
While the United States sees the strait, which is located between 70 and 100 nautical miles from mainland China as international waters and beyond the territorial sea of any “coastal state”, China sees the strait as its territorial waters, along with the island of Taiwan, which it says is an “inalienable part of China”.
